Another theory on the origins of Xing Yi Quan states that it is based on the use of the spear. This theory tends to hold more weight with modern day practitioners as the movements of Xing Yi and the fighting tactics bear a resemblance to the way a spear is used. The movements of Xing Yi are straight forward and attacks use the entire body in Yang Jwing-Ming (who is not a practitioner of the art) argues that aspects of Xing Yi Quan (particularly the animal styles) are identifiable as far back as the Liang Dynasty at the Shaolin Temple. Yue Fei, therefore, did not strictly invent Xing Yi Quan, but synthesized and perfected existing Shaolin principles into his own style of gongfu which he popularized during his military service.

Xing Yi Quan does not require high kicking or leaping. Xing Yi Quan movements work with traditional Chinese medicine principles to strengthen the internal organs, immune system and heal the joints and spine. Xing Yi Quan was one of the main styles of martial arts used by body guards and escorts in China for 400 years. Hebei Xing Yi Quan style, in contrast to the ShanXi Xingyi Quan style, typically uses much larger frames and can appear slower in practice. Its stances are more open than the ShanXi Xingyi Quan style, and there will generally be less appearance of fah jing energy in the practice of the forms.
